As Griffith said: “Anyone who said or wrote that I wanted to kill Paret was just vicious or stupid or both” (Nine…, p. 70).

See for example: http://www.ppu.org.uk/learn/texts/doc_seville.html.

George Orwell, The sporting spirit: Collected essays, journalism and letters of George Orwell, vol. 4 (London: Secker and Warburg, 1948/1968).

I thought about going all ironic here and threatening to beat Orwell’s ass like a drum, but reconsidered due to general propriety.

As I’m writing this it sounds absurd. Why was there so much fire everywhere? What the hell? Were there really flames everywhere, was it that crazy? You get ejected from any North American stadium if you so much as light a cigarette. How good would it be if you tore out a few seats and lit a bonfire? Would they just kill you right there, or wait until they dragged your ass down into the concourse?

I Youtubed the hell out of Toumba Stadium, PAOK, and Gate 4 and found an awesome series of videos—confirming that, yes, in fact, it is a madhouse, and if anything I was there on a somewhat restrained night. Have a look, especially at one of their Olympiakos matches. Unrelenting gong show.
